Description
Augmentin - penicillin antibiotic and is indicated for treatment of infections caused by certain bacteria.

How to Use
Augmentin can be taken with or without a meal. Do not stop taking Augmentin without your doctor`s approval, even if you feel better. Consult your doctor regarding the dosage suitable for you.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Augmentin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods or other substances, if you have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever or hives, if you have had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to a cephalosporin (e.g., cephalexin) or other beta–lactam antibiotic (e.g., imipenem), if you have kidney problems or gonorrhea, if you have a history of liver problems or yellowing of the eyes or skin, if you are planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Augmentin while you are pregnant. Augmentin is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you use Augmentin, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Augmentin, therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Augmentin only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (e.g., the common cold). Long–term or repeated use of Augmentin may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea or bloody stools. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor. Birth control birth pills may not work as well while you are taking Augmentin. Brown, yellow or gray tooth discoloration may occur in some patients taking Augmentin. The discoloration is reduced or removed by brushing or dental cleaning in most cases. Do not take augmentin if you have infectious mononucleosis (mono), if you are taking a tetracycline antibiotic, if you have recently received or will be receiving live oral typhoid vaccine. Lab tests, including liver function, kidney function and complete blood cell counts, may be performed if you use Augmentin for a long period of time. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to Augmentin effects. These patients may require a lower dose or/ and special monitoring during treatment. Augmentin should be used with great caution in children younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach, or bowel. Do not use Augmentin in children who weigh less than 88 lbs (40 kg), safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the possible side effects are – diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately – allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue), bloody stools, confusion, dark urine, fever, chills or persistent sore throat, red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin, seizures, severe diarrhea, stomach pain or cramps, unusual bruising or bleeding, vaginal discharge or irritation, yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Storage
Store Augmentin at or below 77 °F (25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Augmentin out of the reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Augmentin overdose are – decreased urination, severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, stomach pain, unusual drowsiness.

More Information
Augmentin may cause dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Augmentin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor.
